3 Generations of
Activist Women Filmmakers:
screening and
discussion
Acclaimed
filmmakers ESTELA BRAVO (Fidel;
Holy Father; Gloria, Who Am I? The Found Children of Argentina) and
TAMI GOLD (Every Mother's Son; Making
a Killing) will screen award-winning documentaries about exploitation and
resistance in Latin America. Emerging filmmaker, blogger, and activist KATIE HALPER
(Embedded, La Memoria es Vaga), will host the event and screen
the teaser of her new film.
Estela
Bravo's CHILDREN IN DEBT shows the
effects of Latin America's "external debt" to the U.S., focusing on its youngest victims in Argentina, Peru,
Bolivia and Colombia.
Tami Gold's LAND, RAIN AND FIRE
tells the story of the massive social movement in Oaxaca, Mexico
that began as a teachers' strike for better wages and more student resources,
focusing on the police attack on the morning of June 14, 2006 when more than 50,000 teachers were
camped out with their children.
Katie Halper's ANOTHER CAMP IS POSSIBLE
is a documentary about Camp
Kinderland, the summer "camp
with a conscience."
All 3
filmmakers have a connection with Kinderland, which for over 85 years has been helping
to produce and advance outstanding progressive activists and artists.
After
the screenings, Bravo and Gold will join Halper in a discussion about
progressive culture, the spirit of Kinderland, women in film, and
activist
filmmaking.
